A Story of Renewed Stoke

I stopped by Valentines last night for the lovely Corrina Repp's bday celebration and was greeted with a heart-warming tale. One of the bartenders, the equally lovely Lucy, shared an awesome story with me. A customer stopped in recently while she was working and the two struck up a conversation. He asked if the bar was planning any more surf nights and went on to tell her that he had grown up surfing, but in recent years he'd wandered from the glide. After randomly stumbling upon one of the Lifeswells nights and feeling the stoke, he has gotten back into the water and has even gone on surfari down the coast with a few buddies. Needless to say the story made my night. Stay tuned for more nights. Have a great holiday! The far out go out!

Tennis Anyone?

After a 15 year hiatus from the court I started playing tennis again this week. The mod gods smiled on me by throwing these vintage Fred Perry's back into circulation. I scooped 'em up for $10! Pristine condition, stark white and they fit like a glove! I think these are really going to improve my game...
Explode Into Colors & Extra Golden at Holocene on Thursday. Do yourself a favor and go! This could arguably be the BEST dance party of the summer! Last time Extra Golden played Holocene the dance floor vibrated from pounding feet (and there were only like two dozen people there)! This band seriously brings the party. Bring it!

Secret Dollar Bin Challenge! Now Shush Your Mouth!

One of Portland's long lost small town superstars is coming home for a visit and we're gonna throw a party for him. Brother Justin Miller (AKA Johnny Bigshot AKA DJ Damn Im Thrifty) has been living in Asia for too many years, but this summer he's coming home for a short stay. Anyone who knows Justin knows that he's one cheap SOB! However, Justin has figured out a way to parlay this less than desirable character trait into a good time for all. Wearing his DJDIT cape, he's proven time after time the ability to dig into dollar record bins and strike sonic gold. Well, we're gonna put his superpowers to the test. Upon his arrival in the Rose City he'll be handed a sweaty & crumpled $50 bill and informed that he has 24 hours to put together a 3 hour+ dj set for all of his friends. There are a couple constraints: First off , he's got to use vinyl. He won't be allowed to use ipods, computers or compact discs; Second, he'll be allowed to borrow records from his friends, but no more than two records from each friend and only records that they choose. If he feels he has to play the friend card he's going to have to roll the dice! If you think he might come knocking get those two choices ready people! He'll have to hit the pavement running  and work fast. Come on down to Valentines on Wednesday August 19th and see what he puts together. Please keep this hush to our hero to ensure maximum fun.

LADIES (& GENTLEMEN)...

Lifeswells and Friends present the Portland premier of Tiffany Campbell and Andria Lessler's brand new lady surf film, Dear and Yonder. The evening will kick off with the opening of an art show titled: Mountains, Motorcycles, Horses and Waves. This assemblage of works on paper will feature artists Rick Albano, Alberto Cuadros, Serena Mitnik-Miller, Jeff Canham, Victoria Jarvis, Nat Russell and several others. Early on, Vancouver, BC's Needles and Pins will play some stripped down surfy tunes to whet your palate. Throughout the evening, DJ Zach Reno will be spinning the far-out go-out soundtrack and Holocene will roll out la parrilla for some streetside tacqueria action. The film will start around sundown. Stick around after the screening for a live performance by Tara Jane O'Neil with Marisa Anderson. Come spend the evening with a whole bunch of good folks.

Ain't no mysto to the man

Just back from a quick two day coast trip. Surf was tiny tiny, but it was good to get out there anyway. About a month ago a friend of mine turned me on to a great little pulloff to bed down for the night. It sits a couple hundred feet above the surf and has a fire pit. A primo spot for an econo coast run. I camped there the other night and all was fine until a Clatsop County sheriff came honking in the morning. He was pleasant enough and told me that I was on private property. I apologized and agreed to be on my way. In ten minutes I was packed and on the road. Lesson learned: get up with the sunlight, pack up camp and paddle out before the man's morning rounds. Later on at PC, I paddled out the new log for the first time. What a classic ride! Ooooh, that '66 glide. It's going to be a good summer in the water. Lifeswells tonite at Valentines. See you there.

Early Bruce Brown

We've added another title to the mix for this week's movie night. In honor of my new (by new I mean really frickin' old) O'Neill log we'll be showing Bruce Brown's 1961 Barefoot Adventure, featuring none other than (two eyed era!!!) Jack O'Neill himself. Besides Gentleman Jack, BA has all the usual suspects including Miki 'I've Got Your Passport, Your Money And I'm Out The' Dora, Pat 'OG Papa Man's Man' Curren and Robert 'Endlessly Searching For' August. Come and check out this early offering from the golden BB canon. It'll be a blast!

Getting to know you...

Earlier this week Ventura Mike passed on to me guardianship of a late 60's 10' single fin O'Neill Intruder II. I took her out into the backyard the other day and spent a couple hours checking her out.
Super Tasty Classic Laminate
Holocene Wax Removal Systems Modern Laminate. Thanks Guys!

So, after closer inspection it's safe to say that she's had some hard days. But like all survivors, she's taken her dings in stride to stay in the glide. I'll be taking her out in the next couple of days. Stay tuned...

Jepsen's Skateboard Madness

So, we're gonna switch it up a little and give some screen time to the skaters. Long before The Search For Animal Chin, Shackle Me Not and Sick Boys there was Skateboard Madness. In the late 70's, Hal Jepsen took a break from making surf films and focused his lens on the other cosmic children shredding up the pavement, pools and parks of SoCal. Madness features proto-skaters Stacey Peralta, Alan 'Ollie' Gelfand, Tony Alva, li'l Stevie Caballero and many many others. The super-stoney claymation intro is incredible. Stop on down next friday and experience the insanity. Stay tuned for more titles....
